The Ministry of Science and ICT completed this year’s reviews of national research facilities and equipment, holding 21 sessions and recognizing 1.4387 trillion won of requested 1.5214 trillion won—resulting in 82.8 billion won in savings. The National Research Facility and Equipment Review Committee evaluates the necessity and avoids duplicate purchases of equipment used directly for R&D. This year it reviewed 1,948 items from 20 ministries, accepting 1,780 items, rejecting 145, and conditionally approving 23. The review body operates both budget-stage main reviews and execution-stage ongoing reviews; next year it will keep the same schedule. To support fast starts for AI projects, GPU (graphics processing unit) and other AI ecosystem equipment were added to expedited review items. The ministry said the process aims to maximize national R&D outcomes by promoting strategic investment and centralized, efficient use of equipment rather than fragmented, project- or institute-level ownership.
