Renowned first-generation Korean theater actress Yoon Seok-hwa, who died at 69 after battling a brain tumor, will be laid to rest with ceremonies in Seoul’s Daehangno theater district. Her funeral service and departure (발인) are scheduled for the morning of the 21st at Sinchon Severance Hospital, followed by a traditional outdoor memorial rite (노제) at Hanye Theater around 9:30 PM. The memorial will be held at the site of the former Jeongmiso installation theater (설치극장 정미소), which Yoon ran from 2002 to 2019 and where she staged notable plays. The event is organized by the Korea Theater Workers’ Welfare Foundation, where Yoon served as chair from 2017–2020; foundation chair Gil Hae-yeon will deliver the eulogy and musical performers who worked with Yoon will sing “In the Flower Garden” in tribute. Colleagues will keep the funeral modest per the family’s wishes. Yoon debuted in 1975 and had a distinguished career across theater, musicals, film, and TV, including roles in Masterclass and the musical Empress Myeongseong. She was also a director and theater founder and received multiple awards; the government plans to posthumously honor her with a cultural medal (문화훈장).
