Ahead of its January 10 opening, the Hwacheon Sancheoneo (mountain trout) Festival began its prelude with a lantern street lighting ceremony and the opening of an indoor ice sculpture plaza. The lighting event featured a countdown as dozens of trout-shaped lanterns installed along central streets were illuminated to attract visitors to the downtown area, and included celebratory performances. Many of the lanterns were handcrafted over the past year by local elders, highlighting community involvement. The newly opened indoor ice sculpture plaza spans about 1,700 m² and showcases over 8,500 ice sculptures, including famous global landmarks created by technicians from Harbin’s ice-and-snow company. The plaza opened free to the public on the first day, drawing families and tourists; organizers implemented traffic controls and safety measures in anticipation of crowds. The Hwacheon Sancheoneo Festival runs from January 10 to February 1 and promises winter scenery and family-friendly activities.
