In February, two leading Korean orchestras—the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra and the KBS Symphony Orchestra—competed with performances of Gustav Mahler's symphonies, dubbed 'Mahler Showdown'. On February 20th and 21st, the Seoul Philharmonic, under conductor Jaap van Zweden, performed Mahler's Symphony No. 7, known for its complexity and intrigue. The orchestra's execution was highly lauded, particularly the first movement. Meanwhile, on February 21st, the KBS Symphony Orchestra, directed by Myung-whun Chung, delivered Mahler's Symphony No. 2, also known as the 'Resurrection Symphony', focusing on the emotional depth of the music. Chung's spiritual interpretation created a profound impact despite minor ensemble flaws. These performances highlighted the different strengths and styles of each orchestra and conductor.
