Winter nights in Gangwon Province offer long, clear hours for stargazing thanks to high altitude and low light pollution. The Korean Tourism Organization highlights four top spots. 1) Anbandegi (안반데기) in Gangneung sits around 1,100m; its open highland views reveal vast star-filled skies and seasonal landscapes like rye grasslands and cabbage fields (배추밭). 2) Byeolmaro Observatory (별마로천문대) in Yeongwol, on Bongrae Mountain (799.8m), features large and auxiliary telescopes plus a planetarium-style projection room and guided programs for first-time observers. 3) Time Capsule Park in Jeongseon, at 850m on Saebijae Hill, offers dark skies and sometimes the Milky Way; it’s also known for a pine tree linked to the film “My Sassy Girl” where visitors can install time capsules (seasonal). 4) Cho Kyung-chul Observatory in Hwacheon, named after noted astronomer Cho Kyung-chul, sits at about 1,010m and has over 130 clear observing days annually; its paid “Night Counting Stars” program blends talk and relaxed stargazing. Visitors should dress warmly for high-altitude cold and respect private farmland when visiting.
