A Life on Stage: Beloved Actress Yoon Seok-hwa Passes AwayCreatrip Team
3 months ago
Veteran theatre actress Yoon Seok-hwa, celebrated for commanding stage performances from youth into her seventies, died on the morning of the 19th after battling complications following brain tumor surgery. Known for landmark roles in plays such as Shinui Agnes ("The Lady of the Mysterious Agnes") and Hamlet (where she played Ophelia at 60), she was hailed as a theatrical superstar who drew large audiences in Seoul’s small theatres. Yoon began her career in the 1970s and became famous through the 1983 success of Shinui Agnes, later starring in many acclaimed plays and musicals. Despite fame, she spoke candidly of loneliness and personal struggles—including a public scandal over falsified academic credentials in her 50s and painful setbacks—which she overcame through devotion to the stage and her audience. She founded and ran the small theatre Jeongmiso (a small experimental theatre) in Daehangno, produced and supported productions abroad, and led welfare efforts for performing artists as head of the Theatre Artists Welfare Foundation. A mother through adoption, she also advocated for adoption culture and charity concerts. Her final stage appearance was a brief role in the 2023 play Tokata. Yoon received numerous honors, including the Lee Hae-rang Theatre Award and multiple Baeksang Arts Awards. She is survived by her husband Kim Seok-gi, son Kim Su-min, and daughter Kim Su-hwa. Funeral services are at Severance Hospital in Sinchon; the family announced the procession on the 21st.
