Waves of Mourning for Actress Yoon Seok-hwa: ‘A Pillar of theatre’

Veteran stage actress Yoon Seok-hwa, beloved as the ‘eternal Agnes,’ is being mourned at a funeral hall in Sinchon, Seoul. Cultural Minister Choi Hwi-young, former minister Yoo In-chon and numerous theatre colleagues visited her wake, calling her a ‘major pillar of the theatre world’ and recalling her passionate stage presence and dedication even during illness. Colleagues remembered her generosity, strict self-discipline, and role in shaping modern Korean theatre; many noted recent work together and the shock that her illness began unnoticed during performances. Friends from the arts community, including directors, writers and musicians, paid respects. Yoon’s church will hold three days of memorial services, with the funeral procession on December 21 and the Theatre Artists’ Welfare Foundation overseeing the funeral.
