The Ministry of Science and ICT confirmed 29 universities participating in the 2025 research stipend program for science and engineering graduate students and will start payments in May. The program, launched this year to ensure basic research living stability, guarantees monthly minimum stipends (KRW 800,000 for master's, KRW 1,100,000 for doctoral students) and helps universities build integrated student researcher support systems. In its first year the program used KRW 60 billion to support 35 universities and about 50,000 students, raising average monthly student support by roughly 10%. For 2026 the budget rises to KRW 83 billion, with plans to add at least 15 new participating universities and to provide incentives for high-performing institutions. The government will offer tailored consulting to universities after selection; detailed plans and the application are available on the National Research Foundation website. (KRW = South Korean won)
