South Korea’s Rural Development Administration (RDA) reported that propolis extract (a natural bee product) can significantly reduce immune hypersensitivity linked to atopic dermatitis. Through big-data analysis, cell and animal tests, and a 12-week human trial with 66 participants, researchers found key propolis components interact with immune-related genes and biological processes. In mice given propolis, symptoms improved—50% reduction in dermatitis severity, fewer scratches, and reduced skin water loss. In humans, mRNA expression of interleukin-4 and interleukin-13 fell by about 50% and a blood inflammation marker (ECP) decreased by 12%. The RDA plans to add “immune hypersensitivity relief” to propolis’s approved functions and, after regulatory steps, expects industry partners to start producing related products next year.
