Shinan's famed seasonal spinach, known as Seomcho (island spinach), is being harvested in quantity on Bigeum Island. Farmers are seeing strong yields and higher prices — about 50,000 won per 8kg box on average, up 10,000 won from last year, with peak prices reaching 80,000 won. Daily shipments to markets like Garak-dong in Seoul reach around 2,000 boxes. Grown in germanium-rich open fields, Seomcho is noted for higher antioxidant and nutrient content and a strong sweet flavor, and the main season continues through early April. Bigeum's Seomcho cultivation spans roughly 450 hectares across 700 farms, generating 9.4 billion won last year.
