Rome Considers Charging Visitors to See the Trevi Fountain

Rome city officials are considering charging non-resident tourists a small fee — around €2 — to access the famous Trevi Fountain, possibly beginning next month. The proposal, discussed by tourism councillor Alessandro Onorato, aims to control crowds as visitor numbers soared (about 5.3 million in the first half of this year) and ahead of a large Catholic holy year. Officials say the €2 figure is a minimum and could be adjusted after a trial; they estimate annual revenue could reach €20 million. The move is controversial locally, with some citizens arguing the city’s beauty should remain free. The 1762 Baroque Trevi Fountain (named for the meeting of three roads) is famed for the tradition of tossing a coin over one’s left shoulder with the right hand to ensure a return to Rome (coin-tossing tradition).
