Waves from Busan, a showcase of six Busan-based performing groups, was held successfully at the Korean Cultural Center in New York. The program featured theater, musical, dance, and music works, including modern dance troupe Ja-yu’s new piece “Paradise” and Iljangchunmong’s fusion of gugak (traditional Korean music) and contemporary music titled “Eye Contact.” The event provided networking with New York performing arts professionals and a reception where distribution and collaboration possibilities were discussed. Following the showcase, Busan Foundation for Arts & Culture signed exchange agreements with the Korean Cultural Center in New York and with APAP (Association of Performing Arts Professionals) — APAP’s first formal partnership with an outside organization — which the foundation expects will boost Busan companies’ international expansion. Busan Foundation CEO Oh Jae-hwan said the event demonstrated how artists rooted in the region can connect to global stages and pledged continued support through the Busan International Performing Arts Market.
