The Michelin Guide is expanding its expertise into wine with a new program called 'MICHELIN Grapes,' set to debut in 2026 starting with Burgundy (Bourgogne) and Bordeaux in France. Using five consistent evaluation criteria—grape-growing quality, technical expertise, identity, balance, and consistency—the guide will classify producers into three grape ratings (MICHELIN 3 Grapes, 2 Grapes, 1 Grape) plus a 'Selected' category for reliably good wineries. Dedicated wine inspectors from the Michelin group, including former sommeliers, critics, and production specialists, will conduct independent, panel-based reviews and editorial checks. The highest 'MICHELIN 3 Grapes' recognizes producers whose wines can be trusted across vintages; '2 Grapes' denotes outstanding quality and consistency within a region; '1 Grape' highlights notable wines in excellent vintages. Michelin says the new rating will help both newcomers and experts discover top wine producers and will publicly announce the first selections next year.
