Actress Ye Su-jeong (70) stars in the National Theater of Korea’s modern reworking of Shakespeare’s The Tempest, titled Typhoon, playing Prospera (Prospero reimagined as a woman). The production also gender-switches Alonso to Alonza and focuses on forgiveness over revenge. Ye says she chose the role to challenge societal expectations about femininity (a cultural idea about how women are 'consumed' or expected to behave) and to break stereotypes by showing a different kind of strength and restraint. Known for her natural look and long career across stage, independent film, and TV, Ye describes theater as a space that calms and sharpens her, while independent film lets her raise social issues into public awareness. Typhoon runs through the 28th at Myeongdong Arts Theater; Ye plans to continue balancing theater and indie film work while beginning a new TV shoot after the run.
