An exhibition titled “Paper Flowers (jihwa), Carrying the Scent of Practice” runs Apr 18–23 at Gyeongin Art Museum (2nd hall) in Insadong, Seoul, showcasing the jihwa (traditional paper flowers) ritual decorations of Samwhasa Temple in Donghae. Designated in April as an intangible cultural heritage of Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, Samwhasa’s jihwa—crafted from hanji (Korean paper) dyed with natural pigments (indigo, safflower, sappanwood, gardenia, etc.) and shaped into peony, lotus, chrysanthemum and other flowers—are used as ornate Buddhist ritual adornments (jang-eom). The exhibition highlights the art’s delicate aesthetics, symbolic meaning, and community-based transmission; an opening ceremony is set for Apr 18 at 2 PM. Local authorities noted the tradition’s historical roots in Joseon-era state rituals and praised its organized production and communal preservation. Organizers expect the show to raise awareness and support future conservation and use of the tradition.
