A feature on El Greco’s painting “The Penitent St. Peter” (c.1590–1595), now shown in Seoul, highlights the artist’s dramatic, visible brushstrokes and intense emotional expression. Unlike the smooth, polished portraits of Florentine Renaissance painters like Botticelli and Raphael, El Greco (born Dominikos Theotokopoulos from Crete) leaves energetic marks that make saints’ garments appear storm-tossed. The work depicts Saint Peter’s tears of repentance after denying Jesus three times, with small figures—an angel and Mary Magdalene—announcing the Resurrection. In Catholic Spain, opposed to the Protestant Reformation, such images reinforced the importance of confession (고해성사). El Greco’s distinctive style influenced later artists across Europe, including Édouard Manet and Pablo Picasso.
