Tteun, Gureum theatre company presents an encore production of Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice at Traveler Theatre from December 24–28. Reimagined with a kitschy, humanistic lens, the play uses music, movement and objects to create a lively, visually driven performance. Rather than a simple morality tale, this interpretation examines structures of othering (타자화) and privilege — linking 16th‑century Venice’s discrimination to contemporary divisions in South Korea based on race, gender, religion and region. The company juxtaposes Portia and Jessica to contrast ‘privilege’ and ‘pioneering’ paths, and employs jazz, swing and song alongside physical theatre to make the themes more immediate.
