The Abel Quartet (violins Yun Eun-sol and Park Su-hyun, viola Moon Seo-hyun, cello Jo Hyung-jun) will present the final concerts of their complete Beethoven string quartet series on Feb. 5 and 7 at Seoul Arts Center’s IBK Chamber Hall. The Feb. 5 program features some of Beethoven’s most challenging works: String Quartet No. 4 in C minor, Op. 18-4; the late String Quartet No. 16 in F major, Op. 135, known for Beethoven’s handwritten motto “Muss es sein? – Es muss sein!”; and late-period masterpieces including String Quartet No. 13 in B-flat major, Op. 130 and the Große Fuge (Great Fugue) in B-flat major, Op. 133, noted for their modern, experimental intensity. The Feb. 7 program includes String Quartet No. 5 in A major, Op. 18-5 (showing Mozart’s influence), String Quartet No. 7 in B-flat major “Razumovsky No.1,” Op. 59-1, and the monumental seven-movement late quartet No. 14 in C-sharp minor, Op. 131. Formed 14 years ago in Vienna (비엔나), a key city in Beethoven’s career, the Abel Quartet frames this complete-Beethoven project as a musical full circle connecting their roots and artistic journey.
