Director Chu Jung-hwa adapted Albert Camus’s The Stranger and the myth of Sisyphus into the musical Sisyphus to tell a story about four discarded actors in a broken world. The director said rereading The Stranger in her forties made the novel’s themes resonate anew, and she blended Camus’s existential novel with the Sisyphus myth to avoid a one-note staging. The production uses LED imagery (sun, moon, waves) to reflect changing moods and suggests that hard times can be reinterpreted and overcome. Re-staged one year after its premiere, the show keeps the same set but deepens its world and the actors’ mindsets. Dancer-turned-debut actress Rhei (from dance crew Coca and Butter) joined the cast to reclaim her artistic passion; she sought advice from fellow dancer-turned-performer Aiki (who appeared in the musical Frida) and said colleagues treat her as “not a dancer but a new actor.” Rhei plays “Poet,” and the ensemble includes multiple actors sharing roles such as Unknown, Clown, and Astro. Sisyphus opens Dec 16 at YES24 Stage and runs through Mar 8, 2026.
