Binggrae has begun selling its plant-based Melona ice cream (a popular Korean ice pop) at Carrefour, France’s major supermarket chain. Three flavors—melon, mango and coconut—are available; the melon flavor won the Grand Prix de l'Innovation regional innovation award (Meilleure Innovation) and will roll out to roughly 1,300 Carrefour stores across France. Binggrae plans to accelerate European expansion, already selling in French Asian markets and adding distribution in Germany (Netto) and Carrefour Poland. The plant-based Melona removes all dairy and recreates the original Melona taste and texture using plant ingredients to meet strict European non-tariff barriers on imported dairy. Binggrae first exported the product to Europe in 2023 and reported about a fourfold sales increase in the region last year. The company has also extended its plant-based lineup with a vegan version of Bungeo-ppang samanco (붕어싸만코, a fish-shaped ice cream snack).
