On Dec. 14 Culture Minister Choi Hwi-young attended the 63rd K-Theater Awards in Daehangno, Seoul, and pledged stronger policy support so theatrical creation can remain free and sustainable. Choi called theatre “the most essential art connecting people and society,” noting Korean theatre’s growing international reach and calling the moment a new turning point. The Ministry raised next year’s theatre-related budgets (general account and arts funds) by 9.4% from the previous year. The Korea Theatre Association’s annual festival honored Cornerstone Theatre’s play “No One Wants to Do It These Days, That Yutnori” (yutnori: a traditional Korean board game) as the grand prize; other winners included Yun Min-hoon (best director), Kim Sook-kyung (best playwright), and several acting and staff awards.
