Jeonju Cultural Foundation will run a hands-on program called “A Bowl for Dongji” on the 19th to introduce foreigners to Korea’s winter solstice (Dongji) and the traditional red-bean porridge called patjuk (팥죽). Two sessions at 11:00 and 15:00 will each host up to 20 participants at the Hanbyeok Culture Center, where visitors will learn the meaning and origins of Dongji and make small rice dumplings called saealsim (새알심) to add to the porridge. Registration opens on the 15th on the Jeonju Food Story website and is first-come, first-served. The foundation hopes the cooking experience will deepen foreigners’ understanding of Korean seasonal customs and food culture.
