The Jeju Damwon Seon-Muk Painting Research Group opens its seventh member exhibition from Dec. 16 to Jan. 11 at Gallery ‘Bengdiwat’ in Jeju Folk and Natural History Museum. Founded in 2018, the group has showcased traditional ink-and-line painting (선묵화, seon-mukhwa) across Korea to promote its aesthetics and value. Seon-mukhwa begins from a calm, meditative state; artists quiet their minds and experience deep concentration from the first stroke, letting that inner depth infuse the work. Under the guidance of master Kim Chang-bae (disciple in the lineage of Danwon Kim Hong-do), 12 members present 38 works. The paintings blend crisp brushwork and rich ink aroma, drawing on themes tied to Zen (선) such as tea ceremony, practice, bamboo, plum, orchids, the Ten Ox-Herding Pictures (십우도), landscapes, monks and tea, inviting visitors to pause and reflect.
