Mobile Market Brings Weekly Lifeline to South Korea’s Food Deserts

In a village in Dogok-ri, Dangjin, residents living in a ‘food desert’—areas with few stores and limited delivery—now get weekly visits from a mobile market truck called “Dangchan Store” and a shuttle bus to the nearby cooperative. The truck stocks staples like eggs, tofu, bean sprouts, preserved foods, condiments (e.g., New Sugar, Miwon), cleaning supplies, and shelf-stable items, helping mainly elderly residents avoid dangerous trips on rural roads. The market visit becomes a social event: volunteers assist shoppers, staff check on elders’ well-being, and the village hall serves communal meals, improving both nutrition and social connection. Challenges remain—limited fresh produce, meat and seafood, and the need for pre-ordering and better refrigeration—but local officials say the pilot will be refined to meet community needs.
