Seoul’s winter theater season brings a packed slate of large-scale licensed musicals, new Korean works and two major plays, drawing star performers like Kim Junsu, Jung Sunghwa and Park Jungmin. Eight licensed musicals return or premiere in large theaters, including Moulin Rouge!, Rent, Death Note (10th anniversary with fresh casting), Kinky Boots and Beetlejuice — known for spectacular staging and film adaptations. New or revived Korean creations also shine: the Tony-winning A Very Merry Ending (K musical title: 어쩌면 해피엔딩) moves to a mid-size house for its 10th anniversary, while Fanletter and new adaptations based on Korean novels such as The Man in Hanbok (한복 입은 남자) and Mongyudowon are spotlighted. Two major plays — Life of Pi and Spirited Away (센과 치히로의 행방불명) — are highlighted as winter’s hottest theatrical events, notable for innovative puppetry and projection. The season mixes familiar international hits, high-production spectacles and confident Korean originals, catering to strong year-end demand for live performance.
