On Dec. 11 at Suwon’s Gyeonggi Arts Center, conductor Kim Sun-wook led the Gyeonggi Philharmonic in a moving concert featuring pianist Cho Seong-jin. After Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet Overture opened the program, Cho joined the orchestra for Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, delivering agile, finely shaded playing—described as a catlike intensity as he “hunted” sounds across the keyboard. His control of attack and release and crystalline high notes stood out, and he returned for an encore with Chopin’s Waltz No.7. In the second half, the orchestra performed Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No.6 “Pathétique” (비창), showing strong ensemble focus and a solemn, deeply felt finale that left the hall in hushed reverence. The evening highlighted Cho’s refined soundcraft and the orchestra’s cohesive, emotionally charged performance.
