Sejong Center Rooftop Garden to Open Next Year: 'The City's Roof, an Open Theater'

Seoul has chosen architect Kim Yi-hong (김이홍) + Studio Terra to transform the long-closed rooftop of the Sejong Center's main theater into a public rooftop garden called 'The City's Roof, an Open Theater.' The winning design envisions the rooftop and adjacent plaza as a single 'open theater' stage, offering new urban views that capture a panorama of Gyeongbokgung and Sejong-daero. Judges praised the scheme for its sensitive circulation from the elevator to the roof and for the harmonious blend of architecture and landscape. The project, budgeted at 2.5 billion KRW, is slated for completion and public opening in the second half of next year. The city says the space will become a safe, high-quality urban leisure spot where all citizens can linger and enjoy the scenery.
