A short guide to two top Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc regions: Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé. Both lie along France’s Loire River but show distinct characters. Sancerre (Centre-Loire) yields wines with abundant fruit, a rounded texture and refined mineral notes—aromas include citrus (orange, grapefruit), white flowers (iris, acacia), herbs (mint), white and tropical fruits (peach, pineapple) and a wet-stone mineral quality. Its soils include Terres Blanches (Kimmeridgian marls), Caillottes (limestone with pebbles) and some Silex (flint). Pouilly-Fumé, named for its smoky “fumé” (smoke) character from flint (silex) soils, offers crisp, structured wines with pronounced smoky mineral (gun-flint) notes and elegance. Sancerre grows mainly Sauvignon Blanc (80%) and also Pinot Noir for reds and rosés; Pouilly-Fumé produces only Sauvignon Blanc. Terroir differences—age and composition of soils like Kimmeridgian marls, Caillottes and Silex—drive the contrast: Sancerre tends toward fruitiness and roundness, Pouilly-Fumé toward smoky mineral structure. (Silex: flint soil; Terres Blanches: white marl soil; AOC: French controlled appellation)
