South Korea’s food safety authority reported that of 747 imported food items judged noncompliant from June to December, 305 (about 40%) were from China — the highest share among roughly 65 source countries. Failures covered a wide range of items, including packaging and kitchenware (plastic tumblers, bottles, lunch containers, cutting boards, pots and pans, children's tableware), processed foods (bread, snacks, frozen seafood, sauces), and agricultural products (carrots, broccoli, spinach, mushrooms). Many kitchen items leached hazardous substances such as isocyanates, 1,3-butadiene (classified as a carcinogen by the IARC), primary aromatic amines (PAA) and excess nickel, lead or cadmium. Glassware that failed heat-shock tests was also found. Processed foods showed excessive preservatives, unauthorized synthetic colorings (e.g., Red 40, Red 102, Blue 1), microbial contamination (including Listeria) and mycotoxins like aflatoxin. Authorities returned or destroyed all noncompliant imports and treat food-contact containers as imported food subject to the same safety standards. (IARC: International Agency for Research on Cancer)
