Yeongwol County's Hoya Geography Museum will hold a special exhibition, Oct. 15–21, at the Yeongwol Culture and Arts Center showcasing Japanese maps that depict Dokdo as Korean territory. The second annual show brings maps displayed at a National Assembly event marking the 125th anniversary of the Dokdo Imperial Decree. The museum, founded in 2007, has spent 18 years collecting and researching maps that affirm Dokdo as Korean, arguing that Joseon (a Korean dynasty) was the first to map Dokdo along the East Sea and that Japan historically recognized Dokdo and Ulleungdo as Joseon territory. Curators emphasize how Western mapmakers relied on Japanese sources and repeated errors, framing Japan's claim to Dokdo as a “map war.” The exhibit aims to present cartographic evidence of Korea’s longstanding sovereignty over Dokdo (a group of islets contested between Korea and Japan).
