'Life of Pi,' a stage adaptation of Yann Martel’s novel that won multiple Tony and Olivier Awards and is categorized as a play in the US/UK, is being marketed as a musical in Korea. The show has little singing and minimal music, but Korean producers and ticket platforms often list works like circus shows (Cirque du Soleil's 'Quidam'/'Kooza'), non-verbal performances ('Nanta', 'Jump'), certain magic shows, and even some traditional Korean operas (changgeuk) under the musical category—partly because musicals dominate box office revenue and receive more exposure. This practice inflates ticket prices (musicals command far higher prices than plays), can mislead audiences, and risks distorting the performing arts market and reputation of non-musical genres. With more hybrid and cross-genre productions emerging, the article argues for clearer genre classification on ticketing sites and revised ranking methods (for example by theater size rather than genre), calling for discussion among artists, producers, and ticket platforms.
