The National Asia Culture Center (ACC) hosts a large retrospective, "O Seung-yun: Colors of Pungsu, Melody of Life," from Dec. 10 to Jan. 18 in Exhibition Hall 6. The show presents 37 works (30 paintings, 7 prints) by O Seung-yun (1939–2006), a leading Korean figurative painter who explored the harmony between nature and humans throughout his career. The exhibition reinterprets Korean color aesthetics and identity through his lifelong interest in pungsu (Korean geomancy), obangsaek (traditional five-directional color palette), and folk forms. Key works include “Hoisang,” which won a special prize at the 1996 Monaco International Contemporary Art Exhibition, landscapes such as “Pungsu Mudeungsan,” “Geumgangsan,” and “Dokdo,” and the landmark 2004 Biennale piece “History of Wind and Water.” Born in Gaeseong and active mainly in Gwangju, O was the son of early Korean impressionist artist O Ji-ho and modernized Korean sentiment and color in his art. ACC director Kim Sang-wook said the exhibition celebrates the artist’s elevation of nature and life order into art and hopes visitors will feel the harmony and vitality of his work.
