Jeju to Monitor Overcharging, Boosts Digital and Eco-Friendly Tourism

Jeju Governor Oh Young-hoon says tourism drives the island’s economy (service sector ~72%). After an early-year slump, demand rebounded following a travel subsidy program “Jeju’s Gift,” pricing transparency measures and an expanding “fair price” business list. The province will launch continuous price-monitoring to curb overcharging (바가지요금) and foster industry self-regulation through public-private councils and a “Promise with Jeju” campaign. Digital initiatives include island-wide QR and zero-pay mobile payments, a membership NFT travel pass “Nowda” with 100,000+ sign-ups, and QR payment for buses. Jeju is also promoting longer stays via food tourism, workation/runcation-friendly policies, and participatory eco-programs (plogging, RE100 camping) aligned with its 2035 carbon-neutral goal.
