Strawberry Prices Fall 20% in December; No 'Golden Strawberry' Shortage This Year

Strawberry prices in South Korea have fallen sharply in December, dropping about 20% as supply stabilizes. Improved production—especially wider use of greenhouse (facility) cultivation—and steadier shipments have prevented a repeat of last year’s severe shortages that led to the term "golden strawberry" (금딸기) for extremely expensive strawberries. Wholesale prices reached around 16,265 won per kg and retail box prices are down from last year. The dessert and beverage industry says the eased raw-material cost pressure lets them plan stable menus and pricing this winter. However, some consumer prices remain high: certain cafes slightly raised prices year-on-year, and some hotels increased strawberry buffet rates by 3–28%, reflecting past cost pass-throughs, premium positioning, or margin strategies. Overall, market watchers expect normal seasonal demand but little chance of another extreme price surge this winter.
