Hwacheon’s annual Sancheoneo (mountain trout) Festival season is being marked with a lantern-street lighting ceremony and indoor ice-sculpture plaza opening on the 20th, ahead of the festival’s Jan 10–Feb 1 run. The lantern street event will display handcrafted Sancheoneo lanterns (산천어등) made over the past year by local elders and LED decorations along the town to draw visitors, followed by celebration performances after a countdown. A ribbon-cutting-style ice-plaza opening will showcase indoor ice sculptures—more than 8,500 pieces creating famous world architecture and other forms—carved by technicians from Harbin. Hwacheon county plans traffic control in the town center from 4 p.m. on the 21st until the events end to manage crowds. Officials say the festival aims to be a safe and enjoyable experience for the many visitors who wait all year to attend.
