Renowned architect Choi Wook of OneOOne Architex, designer of the National Museum of Korea’s immersive ‘Room of Contemplation’ (사유의 방), will design a new museum for artist Lee Ufan next to Hoam Museum in Yongin. Construction is slated to begin in about a year with completion targeted for fall 2029; the two-story facility will contain roughly eight exhibition rooms. The project started from a simple sketch by Lee Ufan emphasizing spaces for encounters, reflecting his focus on relationships between objects. Lee, associated with the Mono-ha (모노하) movement, has existing museums or spaces in Naoshima (Japan), Busan, and Arles (France); the Yongin museum will add a Korean venue designed by the architect known for projects like the Hyundai Card Design Library and the Nam June Paik Memorial. Separately, Hoam Museum opened a small on-site Lee Ufan space called ‘Silentium’ (실렌티움) this October—an exposed concrete pavilion blending with nature that houses indoor and outdoor works. A new musical piece inspired by Lee’s work by young composer Lee Ha-neuri will premiere in Busan, highlighting intergenerational collaboration and the theme of ‘relation’ central to Lee’s art.
