Two Decades of Trust Boost Domestic Soybean Use, But Price Remains Barrier

For more than 20 years, the South Korean government and food companies have promoted domestic soybeans as a premium, safe ingredient. Public programs (e.g., the national soybean product support package) fund R&D, processing, packaging and marketing, and have helped raise the share of domestic soybeans from low double digits to the 30% range. Brands now highlight origin labels and child-focused marketing, which appeals to parents who value safety and sustainability. However, domestic soybeans cost three to four times more than imports, keeping everyday shoppers price-sensitive and limiting wider market penetration. Industry leaders call for sustained government support, continued storytelling and measures to narrow the price gap. Experts urge structural policies—higher farmer subsidies, stable procurement prices, and support for new enterprises—to diversify domestic soybean production and secure long-term growth.
