Prague’s Famous Christmas Markets Light Up Czech Winter

Czech Christmas markets have opened across the country, with Prague’s markets widely praised as among the world’s most atmospheric. Between late November and January, visitors find twinkling trees, warm mulled wine, trdelník (a sweet rolled pastry), Czech-style hams and sausages, and sugar-coated nuts amid medieval architecture. Handmade crafts — glasswork, ceramics and wood items — are popular gifts, while carols, choirs and small performances turn city streets into festive stages. Advent events include classical and choral concerts at locations like the Clementinum Mirror Chapel and several historic churches, and Karlovy Vary’s Christmas House offers year-round holiday displays. Many markets run into early January at key sites (Old Town Square, Wenceslas Square, Kampa, Havel Market); schedules vary by city. Traditional Czech customs highlighted include the home-made Advent crown (Advent Crown) with four candles lit weekly, and the nightly gas-lamp lighting on Charles Bridge, a romantic seasonal ritual. Typical holiday foods include fried carp with potato salad, fish soup, the barley-and-mushroom dish kuba, and sweet braided bread vánočka (Vánočka). A special Czech exhibition in Seoul runs through Jan 18, showcasing glass Christmas ornaments and crafts recognized by UNESCO. Direct flights from Incheon to Prague operate several times weekly, making winter travel easier. The Czech Tourism Board plans continued information for Korean travelers during the season.
