Moulin Rouge! reopened in Seoul at Yongsan's Blue Square after three years, offering an even more spectacular hybrid production that blends Broadway and North American tour versions. The show transforms the entire theater into Montmartre with lavish red drapery, chandeliers, giant windmills and elaborate props, creating an immersive ‘show’ experience. Anchored by over 70 pop-song mashups (a mashup is mixing existing songs to create new numbers), the musical threads global hits—like “Lady Marmalade,” “Bad Romance,” “Chandelier,” and Elton John’s “Your Song”—into emotional, high-energy scenes. While Act I celebrates passion and spectacle, Act II exposes the darker realities behind the glitter: possession, commerce, and how capitalism can corrupt art. Satine’s cry, “I am not your possession,” becomes a declaration of human dignity and artistic integrity. The revival tightens choreography, deepens sound, and showcases strong casting—three distinct Cristians and two Sartines—while Korean technical and costume teams achieved world-class polish. Producer CJ ENM emphasizes the immersive staging and production rigor; performers note intense rehearsals and genuine emotional payoff for audiences.
