Korean-American artist Debbie Han returns to Korea for a solo exhibition, “Odyssey of Becoming: SHADOW PEOPLE,” at Yeongeun Museum in Gwangju through the 28th. The show presents new large installations, sculptures, reliefs, paintings and drawings created over the past decade. Central is the “Shadow People” series: sculptures and paintings that depict the silhouettes of digital-age humans—figures hunched over smartphones combined with meditative poses—exploring the ambivalent portrait of contemporary life. Han says the works probe intersections between social and inner selves, civilization and nature, and essence and appearance. The museum frames the exhibition as an intense, autobiographical journey of self-discovery translated into vivid visual forms.
