A Korean adaptation of German playwright Roland Schimmelpfennig’s acclaimed play 'The Golden Dragon' debuts as 'Ansan, The Golden Dragon' at Seoul’s Theater Qoom from Dec 12–21. Directed and adapted by Choi Chi‑eon, the production relocates the play to Ansan’s multicultural district (a neighborhood known for many migrant communities) and reframes the story to reflect Korea’s social and economic context. The drama centers on a young Vietnamese worker called “Kko‑ma” employed at the ‘Golden Dragon’ restaurant (a Thai‑Chinese‑Vietnamese eatery) and explores undocumented status, labor exploitation, isolation, discrimination and physical suffering (tooth decay used as a metaphor for systemic pain). The non‑linear piece consists of seven episodes and 48 scenes; six actors perform 17 roles, crossing gender and age boundaries in a post‑narrative, collage‑like form with chorus elements linking fragmented scenes. The cast features noted actor Kim Seong‑eun alongside the resident ensemble from creative group Sangsang Dumok.
