'Not Welcome Alone': Some Korean Restaurants Reject Solo Diners Despite Rise in One-Person Households

South Korea is seeing a tension between growing one-person households (1인 가구) and some restaurants that still refuse solo diners ('혼밥'). While 1-person households now make up about 36% of all households and solo dining rates have risen for breakfast, lunch and dinner, some eateries post signs asking solo customers to order for two or not to dine alone, citing table use and peak-hour crowding. The issue drew international attention after foreign media reported such refusals. At the same time, food companies, franchises and delivery platforms are responding to single-person demand with one-person menu options, single-portion delivery services, and convenience-store ready meals. Local governments and tourist areas are also promoting 'solo-friendly' restaurants. Experts say refusals could hurt long-term competitiveness and recommend strategic adjustments—like adding single seats or one-person menus—to serve the growing solo-diner market.
