The National Changgeuk Company presents its annual year-end pansori showcase, ‘Songnyeon Pansori,’ on Dec. 19–20 at the Daloreum Theater, celebrating the 40th anniversary of the National Theater’s ‘Wanchang Pansori’ series. Launched in 1984, Wanchang Pansori features full-length pansori performances (a traditional Korean musical storytelling) that highlight the depth and aesthetics of each work; over 100 singers have appeared in the series. This year’s program brings together leading masters, including six national intangible cultural heritage holders and five provincial heritage holders, along with veteran accompanists (gosu) and former emcees. Performers across the two nights will present excerpts from major pansori works such as Sugungga, Jeokbyeokga, Simcheongga, Chunhyangga, and Heungboga. The production also uses digital preservation methods: a hologram performance of late master Song Sun-seop’s Jeokbyeokga and archival video screenings commemorate four decades of performances and support traditional arts transmission.
