Kang Wi-won, a prominent South Korean documentary photographer, opened the Kang Wi-won Gallery on Dec. 6 in Wicheon-ri, Nongong-eup, Dalseong County. The 132 m² space houses an exhibition hall, archives, and storage for 58 years of his work, publications, and materials. The inaugural show, “On the Road,” features 36 selected early gelatin silver black-and-white prints that Kang produced while reworking negatives in a darkroom. Many images depict local scenes where he lived and worked—traditional hanok villages (한옥), markets like Seomun Market, school life of former students, and riverside labor sites—reflecting his lifelong habit of carrying a camera and studying the social and historical context of places before photographing them. Curator Kang Ji-ho says the exhibition recalls the photographer’s early chronology and asks where his current practice stands along that path. The gallery will host two planned exhibitions a year, open weekends to the public and weekdays by reservation; the opening show runs through May 28 next year. (Contact: 010-2725-0727)
