This column links the life and poetry of Yi Yuk-sa (born Lee Won-rok), a celebrated Korean resistance poet and independence activist, to a local wine project in his native Dosan-myeon, Andong. Inspired by his poem “Cheongpodo” (green grapes), villagers produce “264 Cheongpodo Wine” using the Korean grape variety Cheongsoo grown locally. Under Korean law, fruit wines can qualify as traditional liquor (jeontongju) when made by regional producers from local ingredients, allowing benefits such as tax breaks and online sales. Bottles named after Yi’s poems (e.g., Jeoljeong, Gwangya, Kkot) carry his verses on the labels; part of proceeds support the Yi Yuk-sa Literature Museum. The initiative ties literature, agriculture, local economy and cultural heritage into a small but meaningful regional ecosystem.
