The beloved British character Paddington has been brought to life on the London stage in a new musical adaptation that faithfully preserves his red hat, blue duffle coat, and gentle manners. Debuting at the Savoy Theatre, the production solved the challenge of making Paddington appear “alive” without visible puppeteers by using two performers: Arti Shah, a creature performer who provides the physical movement, and James Hamid, who sings and remotely controls facial expressions. Expert direction, intricate puppetry and design (by Tara Jafar), and lively music blend to create a convincing, warm character. The show celebrates London with visual set pieces and numbers like “The Rhythm of London,” while telling layered stories about family, neighbor conflicts, and kindness. Rooted in the original 1958 book’s themes—originally aligned with accepting refugee children—the musical emphasizes diversity, inclusion, and small acts of courtesy that make a city welcoming to everyone. The casting of a disabled actor in a central role highlights the production’s commitment to representation and the collaborative spirit behind the show.
