Convergence Research Must Evolve for the AI Era — Future Convergence Forum in H2Creatrip Team
3 months ago
South Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT held the 17th Future Convergence Forum at Seoul National University to discuss strategies for convergence research in the AI era. The forum, organized with the Future Convergence Council and KIST’s Future Convergence Strategy Center, reviewed how technologies are merging and identified promising future convergence technologies based on patent and paper analyses. Keynote speaker Prof. Choi Jae-bung (Sungkyunkwan University) outlined the shift to an AI civilization and proposed directions for convergence research. Awarded researchers included Prof. Kim Jeong (KAIST) for robotic skin, Prof. Hwang Yong-seok (Seoul National University) for plasma control in small fusion reactors, and Prof. Yoon Ki-ro (Konkuk University) for air filtration systems. Expert panels highlighted candidate priority areas: disease early-prediction and post-treatment for limb paralysis; soft-material robotic artificial muscles for a robot-coexistence society (hardware) and real-time adaptive intelligence for new environments (AI); reducing energy use in high-heat infrastructure (cooling materials and AI thermal control); and powering smart devices without batteries using energy harvesting plus wireless power transfer. The ministry said it will actively support strategic discovery of promising convergence technologies and adapt the research ecosystem to fit the AI era.
