Daejeon’s famed bakery Seongsimdang has brought back its signature winter cake, the strawberry ‘Siru’ (a cake that contains an entire box of strawberries), stirring excitement as cake prices rise. Seongsimdang opened Christmas cake reservations on Dec. 1 and will sell the Strawberry Siru from Dec. 23. The lineup includes several sizes and varieties, with the 2.3 kg Strawberry Siru priced at 49,000 KRW and available only for in-person purchase at the main cake boutique — no online or preorders — to avoid repeat ‘open-run’ and resale issues from last year. Sales dates and availability vary by branch, and the bakery warned that schedules may change depending on ingredient supply and prohibited unauthorized purchasing agents due to risks of spoilage and damage during transport. The return is notable amid “cakeflation” (a blend of “cake” and “inflation”): luxury hotel cakes have surged in price, with Seoul’s Shilla Hotel offering a truffle-topped cake called “The Finest Luxury” at 500,000 KRW, the most expensive seasonal cake publicly announced this year.
