Coupang Tightens Security: External Meetings Restricted, WFH Phase-Out Under Review

Coupang is tightening internal controls after a massive leak of 33.7 million customer records. The company told employees that exposed data were limited to domestic accounts and included names, emails, phone numbers, addresses and some order details. Coupang has blocked the unauthorized access route, stepped up monitoring, and hired an external cybersecurity firm while pledging cooperation with investigators and regulators. As part of a stronger security posture, some departments have suspended external meetings and public communications. Management is reportedly considering a phased end to work-from-home (WFH) arrangements—previously widely used due to collaboration with overseas staff—after concerns that remote access to internal networks revealed structural vulnerabilities. The move has stirred employee anxiety on internal forums (e.g., Blind), with some arguing that reducing WFH unfairly shifts responsibility to affected staff. Lawmakers and regulators will press Coupang leaders, including CEO Park Dae-joon and the CISO, in upcoming parliamentary hearings as authorities seek remedies and measures to restore trust.
