Professor Kwan-Hyung Lee of Seoul National University received the December Science and Technology Person of the Month award for developing a novel 'hypotaxy' process that enables large-area synthesis of two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). Unlike traditional epitaxy (layer-by-layer growth on a substrate), hypotaxy guides 2D materials to grow downward, allowing high-quality single-crystal MoS2 and other TMD films on previously incompatible surfaces like amorphous SiO2 and metals. The team demonstrated 4-inch wafer-scale single-crystal MoS2, precise control of TMD layer number by adjusting metal film thickness, and world-class electrical performance. The method is compatible with existing semiconductor manufacturing and was published in Nature; it could lay the foundation for mass production of next-generation AI semiconductors. (TMD: transition metal dichalcogenide; MoS2: molybdenum disulfide; SiO2: silicon dioxide)
